Nujiang Grand Canyon

Introduction

The Nujiang Grand Canyon is one of China’s last great wild gorges, stretching over 300 km with roaring waters and sheer cliffs that rise like walls to the sky. It is home to ethnic groups such as the Dulong, Lisu, and Nu people, who still maintain their distinctive traditions and a lifestyle closely tied to the mountains. Traveling through the canyon is both a natural and cultural journey, where every bend of the river reveals awe-inspiring scenery and a glimpse of ancient customs. The canyon is also a vital part of the “Three Parallel Rivers” UNESCO World Heritage Site. Driving north from Gongshan, one soon passes the Bingzhongluo toll gate, entering a sensitive border zone. Along the way, small villages cling to the mountainsides, and remnants of the historic Tea Horse Road can still be found.
